What it is and who it's for

Ramp is a US financial-operations platform: corporate cards, spend management, bill pay, procurement, travel and accounting automation with an AI layer. It's aimed first and foremost at SMBs and mid-market in the US (best fit 50–1,000 employees).

It requires a US entity. Founded in 2019, it grew fast: 50,000 → 70,000 customers and $100B+ in volume.

AI and automation

AI Policy Agents (since July 2025) are 'agents for controllers': they auto-apply expense policy to every transaction, auto-approve low-risk items, flag what needs a human, block violations and detect fraud. They run on OpenAI reasoning models; early customers claimed 99% approval accuracy.

  • AI-assisted coding and auto-reconciliation with continuous ERP sync all month
  • Receipt matching via email and SMS with automatic follow-up
  • AI reporting — plain-English questions turned into charts; a SOX-compliant audit log
  • AI Token Spend Management and scoped virtual cards for AI agents

Advantages

  • A free core — a functional Free tier (unlimited cards, expense policy, extraction)
  • Strong ERP integration and auto-reconciliation (especially NetSuite and Sage Intacct)
  • A consumer-grade UX — submit receipts by text, card-level limits, fast approvals
  • Mature, auditable AI agents with confidence metrics and human override
  • 1.5% cashback on all spend plus platform scale

A startup on the Free tier replaces spreadsheets: card-level limits, automatic receipt matching and auto-sync into QuickBooks or NetSuite.

A mid-market finance team turns on Policy Agents to auto-approve low-risk T&E without expanding the controller headcount.

Pitfalls

  • Monetization via interchange — the platform has an interest in your spend growing; as of June 2026 there's a $0.59 fee for standard ACH
  • US-centric: you need a US entity and EIN, and native multi-currency is weak
  • The credit limit is tied to your bank balance and reviewed daily — it can drop sharply
  • Support: complaints about bot-led support (especially on the Free tier) and weak onboarding
  • AP functionality is basic relative to Tipalti, BILL and Vic.ai; payments made outside Ramp don't sync to the ERP

Pricing

Prices in USD per user per month (via Corpay, Capterra, Vendr; current as of fall 2026).

Ramp's core economics are interchange plus 1.5% cashback, not the subscription. At large scale (200+ seats) the Plus price falls to ~$8–12/user.

Our honest verdict

Best-in-class unified spend/expense for US SMBs and mid-market: a functional Free tier, mature AI agents on OpenAI reasoning models, and top-tier ERP integration — real automation without an enterprise price tag.

The downsides are structural: the US tie, the interchange model, unpredictable credit-limit drops and weak live support on the lower tiers.

Who it's for

US SMBs and mid-market that need unified spend/expense with strong AI and a free start.

Who it isn't for

Businesses outside the US, companies with global multi-currency operations, and anyone who needs deep enterprise-grade AP (Tipalti, Vic.ai).
